All courses funded by this research school make their material freely available online using a Creative Commons licence. Lectures may be recorded and shared online.

Compulsory courses (3–5 HP)

The basis of the research school is two courses per year. Later courses may assume mastery of concepts taught earlier, so students are encouraged to take them in sequence.

Reproducible Research 3 HP

Samuel Coulbourn Flores, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

Introduces reproducible bioinformatics practice, including containers, version management, pipelining, Unix, and good scientific computing habits.

Statistics in Bioinformatics 3 HP

Covers univariate and multivariate statistics, omics data analysis, and predictive biosignatures for precision medicine.

Experimental Design for High-throughput Technologies 3 HP

Carsten Daub, Karolinska Institutet

Focuses on experimental design for high-throughput studies and critical evaluation of design choices in bioinformatics workflows. Now a DDLS course, funded partly by MedBioInfo. Planned to run yearly.

An advanced course in deep learning, funded by DDLS, with seats reserved for MedBioInfo students. We are planning to run this course yearly.

Computational Systems Biology 3–5 HP

Mika Gustafsson, Linköping University

Introduces systems biology concepts and mathematical models for biomedical research, from small-scale to large-scale modelling. This course runs every other year from 2026.

Career Alternatives and Your Scientific CV 1 HP

Carsten Daub, Karolinska Institutet

Explores academic and especially industry careers, with exercises on CV writing and interviews.

Annual meetings

Another major part of the research school is the annual meeting. These meetings combine student presentations, faculty talks, mentoring, and soft-skills sessions, while also helping students build a long-term national scientific network. Students in years 1-3 are automatically invited, 4th year students please contact the Dean of Students to join.

Completion certificate

We issue the MedBioInfo completion certificate upon request to students who complete the program. In some cases we may ask you to send in your course and annual meeting certificates. The certificate is not a formal degree, and does not confer HP.
